Promotions 101
For Venues, Promoters & Friends of the Cirkus
Promotional Tips and Tricks
The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus would like to thank you for your help
in bringing the Cirkus to town. Because we are a little different
from the bands that you may be used to presenting in your space, we
have listed some tricks that have worked for us in 10 years of
bringing Cirkus entertainment to music venues. If you are not a
venue, but a friend who is helping with advance promotions, here are
some basic details to get the ball rolling: Everyone should know that
the Cirkus is coming! This means that we want to see posters on every
corner, announcements on the radio, articles in the newspapers,
skywriting, billboards, clowns on television, and fliers on every
counter! The Cirkus needs a focused campaign that publicizes its many
unique features, especially the fact that WE ARE A CIRKUS.
- Remember, everyone loves the Cirkus! They just don't know it yet.
Play our Promo DVD on the bar TV. They'll see foxy chicks on
trapezes, fire eaters, a sword swallower, acrobats, tattooed
jugglers, The Blue Bunny- and they'll want MORE!
- Venues and promoters will receive promotional packages that
include press releases, masters for invites, and posters.
Downloadable press kits and promotional materials are available at
http://www.bindlestiff.org/p_tools.html You will need to include and/
or verify the location, date, time, and price of the event
specified. Please double check all of the information before you make
hundreds of copies.
- Invites look best on assorted bright colors or in full color.
Remember, it is a Cirkus. The fliers should be passed out, thrown
from high windows, and left on counters around town. We have learned
that if you hand a person an invite that is on fire, the person will
generally come to the show.
- The press release should be faxed or sent to all local newspapers
and public, alternative, and rock radio stations. Most papers have
deadlines at least one or two weeks prior to the event. Ask the
weeklies to write a story that will come out a couple days before the
show.

creating a listing on your website, take a look at what these venues
have done:
- The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus is available for phone interviews.
Media can call 347-404-0422 (Keith Nelson) and 917-744-6844
(Stephanie Monseu). We are also available for radio talk shows,
television appearances, and on occasion, death defying stunts. We do
an on-air Radio Sideshow that is foolproof. We also suggest that
venues do a few on air ticket giveaways. We'll gladly send CD's in
advance with our show music: play it in the club, send it to the
radio stations, put it on your i-pod!
- If you are unable to do adequate promotion please let us know at
least one month prior to our arrival. If there is a local Street Team
postering and flyering service, please put us in touch. Email
keith@bindlestiff.org with details.
- If you have any questions, contact us immediately! 347-404-0422
(Keith Nelson) or 917-744-6844 (Stephanie Monseu)
- You can do a lot of promotions/publicity without spending much
money. When it comes to spreading the word, use your local resources:
word of mouth, email groups, the internet (myspace, tribe, etc.), etc.
Remember that we will be eternally grateful to you for making our
show vibrate with excitement. Showers of clown makeup, glitter, toys, stickers, and other booty may
fall upon you.
