♥ Bindlestiff Family Cirkus receives Senior Center Cultural Initiative Grant
    February 2008

Monday, February 3 marked the official launch of SM(ART)s: Seniors Meet the ARTs, a new collaboration between the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), the Department for the Aging (DFTA), and the New York City Council, which will bring together New York City cultural organizations and senior centers. Bindlestiff Co-founders Keith Nelson and Stephanie Monseu attended the event at The Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan, giving demonstrations of juggling and leading a juggling mini-workshop with several senior participants. As part of the SM(ART)s initiative, the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus will partner with Catholic Charities The Bay Senior Center in Brooklyn this year to bring Vaudeville shows and juggling workshops to their Senior participants.

♥ BFC Nominated for two New York Innovative Theatre Awards

In July 2005, the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus's most recent production, From the Gutter to the Glitter, was nominated for two New York Innovative Theatre Awards: Outstanding Original Music and Outstanding Performance Art Production. The IT Awards, organized to celebrate and honor New York City's vibrant Off-Off-Broadway theater, also aim to bring together this community of artists, and it's very exciting for Bindlestiff to be recognized in the award's debut year. The winners will be announced in September. Wish us luck!

♥ Cirkus Co-founders move to Hudson, NY

Bindlestiff Family Cirkus co-founders set up shop in Hudson, New York so upstate New York can expect to see more of Bindlestiff Family Cirkus in the coming years. This past fall Cirkus co-founders, Keith Nelson and Stephanie Monseu got a home in the town and look forward to reawakening the dusty variety circuit of the Catskills and Borscht Belt.

    ♥ BFC Headquarters Faces Eviction

It looks like the battle to stay in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn, NY may not continue for much longer. After over a decade, gentrification has taken its toll. Our office, rehearsal space and home as we know is to soon change.

This will leave two circuses, Autonomedia, and a number of artists without a home base. Stay tuned for updates.
