Beginner's Juggling Class with Stephanie Monseu
at New York Circus Arts Academy
7 week course starting April 23, 2007
Juggling is a dynamic Circus tradition that combines all the excitement and physical prowess of a sport with the creativity and passion of the arts. A truly ambidextrous skill, juggling actively engages both sides of your brain and encourages eye–hand coordination and balanced thought. As a practical, technical skill, juggling and prop manipulation can round out your resume as a performer and enhance the disciplines you already practice. A classic ground act, jugglers can work almost anywhere!
7 Week Course Description:
Each 90 minute class will start with a group warm-up. A physical conditioning routine with stretching and toning excersizes will make up the first 20 minutes of class
Skill building will then comprise the majority of each class. Starting with balls and scarves, I'll introduce new props weekly and allow students to explore movement and manipulative possibilities. Students are encouraged to bring other skill elements into their juggling work, such as dance or acrobatics. As the program unfolds, students will naturally gravitate toward certain props and skills, but should be able to demonstrate familiarity with basic 3-object juggling patterns: balls and scarves; also basic balancing skills ( peacock feathers, brooms, etc.) Students may advance to club juggling and passing patterns. I will make a basic juggling kit available for purchase which will include 3 balls, 3 scarves, and a peacock feather so students can continue working between class sessions.
Props supplied: juggling balls, scarves, peacock feathers, juggling clubs, juggling rings, diabolos, devil sticks, canes (for balancing), lassos
Suggested Attire:
Please dress in comfortable layers of loose fitting or stretchy clothing as you will be moving a lot! If you have ballet or gymnastic slippers, great. Otherwise, sneakers or bare feet are fine. This is an activity of medium physical strenuousness, please make me aware of any injuries of physical limitations or challenges.
