Iconic circus star Hovey Burgess celebrates his 75th birthday with a one-of-a-kind evening featuring his favorite circus, burlesque, and sideshow artists, selected from a lifetime spent around the stage. “The performers are all on my bucket list to see one more time,” says Burgess. Drawing on 50 years of theater teaching at NYU, 25 years with the celebrated Circus Flora, 20 years with the iconic Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, and his own attendance at more than 6,000 variety performances, Burgess has personally curated this elite evening of world-class talent. “I have been very specific about what parts of their material I want. The selections will greatly complement one another, there will be nothing repetitive, and the acts will be very pure—as a company, they will embody everything that I look for in a show.”
This performing arts extravaganza will be a veritable “who’s who” of the variety arts world, with stars of the circus gathering to celebrate one of their most inspiring colleagues and mentors.
The evening will be hosted by Bindlestiff Family Cirkus co-founder Stephanie Monseu. The all-star cast includes: Kristin Olness, Boo Boo Darlin’, Trixie Little, Pinkie Special, Jen Slaw, Michael Davis, Phil Marsh, Carla Rhodes, Tara Quinn, Tanya Gagne, Michelle Dortignac, Dick Monday, Zero Boy, and Keith Nelson.
The gala is also a fundraiser for Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, one of Burgess’s best-loved circus companies. The not-for-profit Bindlestiff Family Cirkus sponsors emerging variety performers, runs youth circus training programs, and has produced circus shows for over two decades. Burgess is Chair of the Bindlestiff Board of Directors.
