La Pazza Vita focuses on the rich cultural history of Italian immigrant communities whose traditions spread to America and became absorbed into our own performing arts traditions. The piece pays homage to European circus tradition as well as to the unique spirit and viewpoint of Fellini and his collaborators, while creating a group of dances and circus acts that are filled with wit, striking images and a buoyant sense of life. The production is conceived and directed by Jim Furlong, with choreography by Matthew Westerby of Covenant Ballet Theatre and circus acts by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus led by Keith Nelson.
Hudson Guild Theatre Company (HGTC) serves a community of more than 5000 low-income residents of diverse cultural backgrounds and their youth in neighborhood schools. The Company is committed to theatre as a timeless art form which educates and bridges ages, ethnicities and religions — stirring everyone to empathy or laughter, and hope. Led by professional theatre artists, the Company includes local residents in many aspects of production. HGTC’s outreach programs empower children and youth to explore role options and positive life choices.
Participation by Bindlestiff and Covenant performers in La Pazza Vita through the Cultural Immigrant Initiative allows for the Guild’s community to gain exposure to both the European circus tradition as well as the themes and music found in the work of the great Italian film director Federico Fellini. For many this will be their first encounter with the rich traditions and delightful cultural heritage of the Italian immigrant community – a heritage that in turn influenced the evolving musical and theatrical art forms in our own country.
