2016 NYC American Youth Circus Festival – Early Bird Deadline October 15!

aycoBindlestiff Family Cirkus is pleased to host the 2016 NYC American Youth Circus Festival for the American Youth Circus Organization on Saturday, November 12 at Circus Warehouse in Long Island City, New York.

Youth aged 8-21 are invited to participate in a full day of circus workshops (from beginner to advanced), including trapeze, wire walking, clowning, partner acrobatics, juggling, stilt walking, unicycling, and more.  The day is capped off with a showcase featuring performances from the diverse and talented youth in attendance at the festival. Learn something new with us!

No experience necessary, so the brave and curious will have a full day to try new things, and advanced circus students will get to hone their skills with experienced professionals. Participation is limited, and previous years’ events have sold out, so pre-registration is strongly suggested. Early Bird Registration ends October 15.

Festival pass (includes four workshops, two meals, and one showcase): $55-$80; showcase ticket: $10

Perform in Cavalcade of Youth!

Performers under 21 are invited to take the stage in this special circus and variety showcase. Jugglers, clowns, aerialists, magicians, musicians, dancers, acrobats, or other performers, if you’ve got an act, show it off! If you’re thinking of pursuing a professional career, we can help you develop and promote your act. If circus is just a hobby, that’s fine too.

There is no cost to participate (although coaching and act development may be available for an additional fee), and performers share the proceeds from a hat pass.

No audition necessary for ground acts! Aerialists, please send video. All acts will be required to attend a rehearsal earlier on the day of the show.

This year’s HONK NYC! includes a day in Staten Island, with a HONK NYC! Pop-Up at the Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, and an evening concert at Everything Goes Café.  HONK NYC! will also present its 3rd annual HONK! for More Gardens Parade on the Lower East Side, co-presented with More Gardens.
An artist-run festival, primarily underwritten via crowd-funding and small individual donations, the annual cavalcade brings a sense of anarchic, joyful, participatory celebration to audiences. HONK NYC! weaves together musicians and performers from around the globe who share a passion for playing and preserving the grassroots global tradition of street music.
HONK NYC! 2016 is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and also in part by a DCA Premier Grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. HONK NYC’s 2016 programming is presented in conjunction with the following organizations: Ariana’s List, More Gardens!, Rubulad and WFMU Radio’s Transpacific Sound Paradise.

Michael Samuel is a Bay-Area-based graphic imagedesigner whose corporate clients have included global corporations, magazines and typeface design firms. Along with his talents as an artist, Michael has a penchant for unicycling and juggling. Prior to relocating to San Francisco, he was a supporter and friendly face around the NYC Juggle This festivals and NYunifest-2012-logo-color-ver1unifest 2015 modifiedC Unicycle Club gatherings. It’s through these networks that Bindlestiff first connected with Mike and asunifest 2016 circlerevised jpgked him to design logos for the NYC Unicycle Festivals. Starting in 2010, Mike has now contributed seven great logos. A Night at Niblo’s Garden

On the evening of Saturday, July 16, Green-Wood Cemetery will transform into a 19th-century pleasure garden and theater, to celebrate its permanent resident William Niblo (1789–1878). The one-of-a-kind outdoor show and picnic at the site of Niblo’s grand mausoleum will feature entertainment curated by Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, a vaudeville and performing arts powerhouse. Arrive early, as guests are invited to play Victorian amusements including graces, shuttlecocks, and wooden rolling hoops. The performances begin with a grand procession of stilt walkers, penny farthing riders, dancers, and circus performers. These outdoor performances have the 19th-century flair of Niblo’s theater:  guests will be dazzled with fire eaters, jugglers, acrobats, contortionists, a hot air balloon fantasy, and much more. Music will include harp solos, hurdy gurdies, and novelty song sing-alongs. The picnic and rollicking show will surround one of Green-Wood’s beautiful glacial ponds, in front of Niblo’s stately mausoleum. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, picnic dinners and beverages as they step back in time with author, historian and Niblo expert Ben Feldman. After the show, Niblo’s mausoleum will be open for candlelit exploring.
William Niblo himself visited his Green-Wood mausoleum regularly before he was interred there. His combination pleasure garden and theater, Niblo’s Garden, was the Radio City Music Hall of its day. It featured acrobats, vaudeville, dramas, musical concerts, and operas and was the destination for entertainment in New York City. Niblo’s was the site of America’s first work of musical theater. The fashionable theater-garden, located in Manhattan on Broadway between Prince and Crosby, seated 3,200 persons. It was demolished in 1895.

Artist, illustrator, and purveyor of oddities Ashleigh Talbot’s artwork first came into our world when we purchased a copy of “Circus of the Scars”, Jan T. Gregor’s look at the Jim Rose Sideshow’s tours, trials and travails. Madame Talbot’s illustrations brought the text to life, giving soul to the aesthetic of the sideshow revival – part Victoriana, part old-school sailor tattoo, part Tarot, part dark whimsy.

Through our friendship with Tim Cridland, Rose’s Human Pincushion and a Sideshow historian and legend in his own right, we asked Ashleigh to design a poster for the 2002 production Buckaroo Bindlestiff’s Wild West Gender Bender Jamboree. Visual Artists of the Cirkus – Jason Little

Jason Little, an award-winning cartoonist, was pulled into the Bindlestiff Family Circus fold when his now wife, Myla Goldberg, joined the Bindlestiff’s band at the Brooklyn Brewery in 1997 and 1998. Jason created the iconic Jackalope logo that has been Bindlestiff’s primary visual identity since the mid-1990’s. The legendary creature sports a punk attitude and dare-devil panache. It’s been variously referred to as “devil bunny” and “vampire rabbit”, among other things. Make no mistake, this mammalian denizen of the western plains is real. It became our mascot when, while on a California-bound tour in 1994, one ran across a Wyoming highway, stopping us in our tracks with its glowing red eyes.

Jason Little also created our first grown-up tour poster- the first not printed at the now-shuttered University Place Kinko’s. On shiny stock, this gorgeous image has been a merch-table staple since our 1998 touring season, which featured Rocket Johnny’s Pogo Stick trip to the moon; Tanya Gagne of the Wau Wau Sisters on trapeze; Sxip Shirey as composer and Musical Maestro; and Lorraine Monseu as Bookmobile Maven. Also touring at times that year were Magic Brian, Scotty the Blue Bunny and Una Mimnagh.

Visual Artists of the Cirkus – Greg Stadnyk

Greg Stadnyk, a friend of Bindlestiff’s longest-serving volunteer-turned Board Member-turned professional musician Ellia Bisker, illustrated the poster for High Heels and Red Noses. Inspiration came from a photographic image by Maike Schulz.

Greg has a varied and successful career as a freelance graphic artist and designer.
