Bindlestiff First of May Award Now Accepting Submissions!

 

Bindlestiff Family Cirkus is now accepting submissions for the Bindlestiff First of May Award – a $500 to $1,000 development grant for full-length variety arts productions.

For nearly 25 years, Bindlestiff Family Variety Arts, Inc. has been enriching New York City’s variety arts culture by producing and presenting unparalleled circus, sideshow and variety arts performances.

Bindlestiff is pleased to announce the seventh annual Bindlestiff First of May Award, which will grant $500 to $1,000 to a variety artist and/or group of variety artists to support their development of an original full-length production.

Previous recipient productions include Clown Baggage, created by Matt Wilson; Unmasked, created and directed by The Lady Aye and Kenwyn Dapo; Solomon the Perplexer, created and written by Tanya Solomon and directed by Corn Mo; Wacky of Wallabazoo, created by Justin Weber; Dandy Darkly’s Trigger Happy; TruDee’s “Dances for Lovers” by Deborah Lohse; Kyle Driggs’ ENSO; Bennett Santora’s Seasons; Adam Kuchler‘s Cupcake Show; and Angelo Iodice’s Bronx cowboy memoir.

Submissions are now open to solo artists or troupes wishing to apply for this year’s award.

Submission guidelines:

1. Proposals must include:
• one-page project description
• links to videos of past work (up to 3)
• resumé and/or bios of participating artists

2. Proposed productions must be at least 40 minutes in length.

3. Productions may be either solo or troupe-based projects. If submitting as a solo artist, applicant must be a NYC resident. If submitting as a troupe, at least 50% of troupe members must be NYC residents.

By submitting a proposal, applicants acknowledge that if the award is granted, 1) development of the proposed production must begin prior to June 30, 2018; 2) a progress report is due by December 31, 2018; and (3) at least one public performance of the production must be presented in New York City before May 1, 2019 (a work in progress performance and/or segment of complete production is acceptable). If these requirements are not met, the award must be returned.

Deadline: Submissions must be received before midnight on April 1, 2018.

Submissions will be evaluated based on artistic merit, unique perspective, and variety arts relevance.

The selected grantee(s) will be announced on May 1, 2018.

DIY Circus Lab for Kids!

Jackie Davis is an amazing woman who has dedicated her life to performing, teaching, and researching the benefits of circus. She is a co-founder of the American Youth Circus Organization, and sparked off a movement called Circademics- thorough research into the practice and results of circus with youth, folks with different abilities, those recovering from trauma and injury. She’s just created a whole new way for anyone and everyone to access the joys of circus- a book called DIY Circus Lab for Kids. We love Jackie Davis!

Bindlestiff’s Cirkus After School at Children’s Workshop

Bindlestiff’s Cirkus After School for students of Children’s Workshop in NYC begins on February 26 and runs through June. Instructors Polly Solomon and Jean-Tae Francis will lead students in exploration of balancing, acrobatics, juggling, stilt walking, and more in weekly sessions. Polly Solomon has been teaching a wide range of circus arts to students of all ages in school, after-school, camp, theater, and studio settings throughout the New York tri-state area for ten years.  She has directed shows nationally for the American Youth Circus Organization including shows presented at the biannual American Youth Circus Festival, in the Chicago Contemporary Circus Festival and the Worldwide Circus Summit.   Polly helped train the leads for Broadway’s recent revival of Pippin the Musical, created Common Ground; a Circus Adaptation of Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman, is co-project founder of Urban Acrobatics: A Circus and Graffiti Spectacular! and producer of 360 Circus.  
 

Jean-Tae Francis began his circus path as a teen at Cirque du Soleil’s Cirque du Monde program at The Point Community Center in the Bronx under the mentorship of Amy Chen.  Since then, he’s performed and coached for the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus; Circus Mojo in Kentucky; Circus Pimparello in Germany; Cirkus Fabrikken in Denmark; and Circus Harmony in St. Louis, MO.

Tony Kieraldo is a pianist, composer, artist, accompanist and musical director. He’s performed for the Obamas at the White House, trained Chinese pianists in Shanghai, musically conducted a critically acclaimed opera, The Mother of Us All, and plays keys with the rock n’ roll group BASH & POP. He lives in Hudson, NY when he’s not on tour or musically directing for dance companies around the world.

Rosie Cheeks is a burlesque performer, actress, go-go dancer, and pin-up model based in New York City. A trained dancer, Rosie performed in musical theater productions, touring nationally and internationally for many years. She began her burlesque career in 2012, and made her debut at Coney Island as a graduate of the New York School of Burlesque. In NYC she’s brought her dynamic, vivacious stylings to The Slipper Room NYC, Nurse Bettie, Dances of Vice and as a 2 year resident performer at Hotel Chantelle. She has also managed Dances of Vice events. Rosie is a featured performer at The Burlesque Show, a weekly production at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City. She is a co-founder of Twirly Whirly Burly-Q, which tours the US.

Reggie Bügmüncher is bicoastal US sideshow performer based in Philadelphia, PA & Los Angeles, CA. She is half of Philadelphia’s The Olde City Sideshow, co-producer of The Southern Sideshow Hootenanny and has been performing in sideshow for over a decade. As a solo performer, she travels the country working everything from the midway to nightclubs acts and burlesque shows. Reggie is one of the few women in the world performing several unique acts such as the anatomical wonder act and riding a motorcycle in a high wire thrill show. She was voted Burlesque Bitch of the year 2014 by Burlesque Bitch Magazine and has been featured in stories by news outlets from Fox to NPR and in books and magazines on Tattoos and Sideshow. She has opened up for Primus, suspended for Jane’s Addiction, performed for Ripley’s Believe it or Not, the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Franklin Institute, and more.
