Announcing the winners of Bindlestiff’s 2018 First of May Award!! Since our first award in 2012, decision-making has gotten tougher and tougher. 14 artists, among NYC’s best and brightest, submitted proposals for consideration this year.
In 2018, four prizes, totaling $3,000, were awarded. Matt Roper and Ekaterina Sknarina with “The Mr. Matt and Miss Ekaterina Show” and Shane Miclon with “The Preconceived Notions of Dr. Pellucida” will each receive $1,000. Paris Sirap with as-yet-untitled comedy juggling show, and Christopher Scheer with “(n)Gender” will each receive $500. In addition to this financial award, Bindlestiff offers First of May awardees benefits such as promotional support, production mentorship, and access to NYC’s Materials for the Arts to secure free props and supplies.
The 2018 First of May Award jury panel included former First of May Award recipients Adam Kuchler, Deborah Lohse, and Justin Weber; Playful Productions founder and circus producer Viveca Gardiner; entertainment booker and Bindlestiff Board of Directors member Michael Bongar; entertainment booker, marketing expert and Bindlestiff Advisory Board member Tina Bongar; Big Apple Circus co-founder and Bindlestiff Board of Directors member Paul Binder; and Bindlestiff co-founder Keith Nelson.
The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus salutes the jury panel members and all 14 applicants for their work in the circus and variety community, and in NYC’s cultural life.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
